Bari – A Charming Old Town in Italy | Top 5 Interesting Spots for Tourists

Bari is a charming old town in Italy. This city is surrounded by a wonderful seaside, vibrant cultural sense with a rich history.  You will be bound to get lost in the unique look of this city. I felt a different pull towards the city when I first saw it which still reminds me of the memories there.

I noticed different unique geographical and structural features in each city of Italy. Most of the tourists with me agreed with me. But I think the beauty of each place is different according to each person’s perspective. If you observe a place of yours deeply, you will understand the greatness of that place. Beauty has to be seen as well as perceived from the mind.

Today I’ll try to discuss the five best places I’ve seen in Bari that you must visit and experience worth the trip.

About Bari
Bari is the capital of the metropolitan city of Bari and Apulia region. This  city is located in the Adriatic sea, southern Italy. It  is the second most important economic centre of Italy.  After Naples it is one of the best developed cities.

The total area of   this city is 117 square kilometres and about 3,16,491 people live in this city. This small city has more people than its size.

Bari is made up of 4 different urban sections. Modern  residential zones surrounding the centre of Bari were built during the 1960s and 1970s.

The main development of this city started at this time. Later after 1990 it started to transform into a developing city. Today it is known as a port and university, popularly known as Saint Nicholas.

the city had strong Greek influences before the Roman era. in ancient Greek it was known as Baplov. in the 3rd century BC it became part of the Roman republic and was subsequently Romanised. In  that time the city developed strategic significance as the point of junction between the coast and land  area.

Throughout the middle ages, Bari served as one of the major slave depots   of the Mediterranean,  providing a Central location for the trade in slavic slaves.

Bari has a hot summer Mediterranean climate bordering on a humid subtropical climate with mild winters and hot, dry summers.

Barish cuisine is based on  three typical agriculture products found within the surrounding region  of Apulia, nimali wheat, olive oil and wine. The  local cuisine is also enriched by the white variety of fruit and Vegetables produced locally. vegetable minestrone , chick peas, broad beans, chicory, celery and fennel are also often served as fast courses or side dishes.


Bari is one of the primary settings of the detective novel “The Black Mountain” by Rex Stout. besides  this a lot of ancient famous plays are produced from this city.

1.Bari Vecchia
Housed in an enchanting place where history and tradition combine to create one of the most charming atmospheres. It belongs to the old part of Bari, which mainly falls within the district of San Nicola.


What I noticed the most here is the historical buildings of different eras. My guide informed me that there is a unique combination of architecture of ancient, medieval and modern buildings. Which I found very interesting.


The environment around it is much more enjoyable. There are many Jewish quarters in the vicinity which will give you an idea of their life in different periods. As I am a first time visitor to this place, my advice would be to start your Bari city tour from this place.

2. Basilica di San Nicola
This  is a famous charge in Bari. the church holds  wide religious significance throughout Europe and the Christian world.  so the Basilica is an important destination for Roman Catholics and worldwide  Christians.

This  Basilica was built in 1089 and construction work was completed in 1197 . The  style of this church structure was Romanesque.

In this church I got to see different types of sculptures which really impressed me. Here various theological issues of ancient times are presented very nicely. Religion loving tourists can worship religion here and learn a lot of information


3.Lungomare
This  is the seaside of Bari. It is basically a beautiful place on the shores of the Adriatic sea. A walk here will give you a sweet feeling that few people are lucky enough to have. As I walked through here nature seemed to take me away in its beauty. Although it gets very crowded as it is on the seashore, you will be able to enjoy its beauty in all its glory.

Here I tried some types of local sea food which was very delicious and there are many types of local jewellery available which are very attractive for women’s beauty sense.

4.Teatro Petruzzelli
this is the largest theatre of the city of Bari and The Fourth Italian theatre by size. this Opera theatre  is really amazing

The architecture of this theatre was the most interesting to me. It is supposed to look like any modern theatre. In my Q&A, the local guide told me it was one of the most famous architectures of the period. So by seeing it a deep idea can be had about the architect of that period

the interior of the theatre is painted by Raffaele Armenise. His work is truly commendable. All the visitors with me who came from different countries all praised him. was doing Not only the interior works but also the exterior works of the opera are truly extraordinary

5. Pinacoteca Metropolitana
It is one of the most popular painting galleries and museums in the city of Bari. The well-decorated building is beautifully decorated with paintings by painters from the Apulia region. All the paintings are really amazing. The use of color in paintings is not seen in many cases in the present era. To me it was the best art gallery I have ever seen.

It was established on 12 July 1928. Here notable artists are Bartelomeo  Vivarini, Paris Bordon, Giovanni, Titoretto, Giorgio Morandi etc. Some of them I know and many others were much more famous in their time.


The paintings are arranged layer by layer in such a beautiful way that it will blow your mind. The picture of the beautiful life system of different eras unfolded before our eyes here. Do visit this museum as it has beautifully and carefully preserved various paintings and important artefacts from the ancient times.

Tips From My Diaries
1. The first thing I would suggest is to  make a proper plan. That is, most cities in Italy are in the spring and fall season, i.e. June, July and September, October. Because during these times you can experience the popular places here very beautifully.

2. I like to walk a lot and most cities in Italy can be explored on foot. So I think you should also travel places on foot and definitely wear comfortable shoes.

3. Be sure to try some of Bari’s delicious local food, such as orecchiette pasta, focaccia barese, and seafood dishes.

4. For a beautiful experience at the beach, you must bring or buy a swimsuit. It doubled my travel experience here.

So today I have discussed about beautiful Bari, one of the best small towns I’ve ever seen. I have been here for a short time but had a great experience.


Not many places visited here but all the places I saw were historical. Many may have changed a lot with the times, but everywhere traces of past history can be found. It is one of the best features of Italy.


Like the cities of Rome, Venice, and Florence, this city has created a mixture of history and tradition. Due to which tourists come to travel. Italy’s history is so rich and rich that all its cities are a must-visit. So if you are in love with travel like me, then go out and explore the cities.
